Consider Prof. Judit Torzsok's translation of the Siddhayogesvarımata, a medieval compendium of Tantric rites, and her analysis of the supernatural powers (siddhis) they were supposed to achieve:
1. sdttvika siddhis: well-being / being well-fed (pusti I dpydyana); expiation / pacification (sdnti); [saving things] in case some disaster occurs (upasarge samut-panne); conquering death (mrtyumjaya); eloquence / poetic talent (kavitva); the ability to be infinitely small, big etc. (animddigundh); final release (moksa).
2. rdjasa siddhis: subjugating people to one's will (vasyd); attracting people (esp. women, dkarsana); going to the underworld (pdtdlecaratvam); flying (khe-caratvam); disappearing (antardhdnam); "pill-siddhi" (a pill, put in the mouth, is said to make one invisible, gulikdsiddhi); and a siddhi with a magic wand and a bowl (siddhakdsthakamandalau).
3. tdmasa siddhis, twelve kinds of black magic (abhicdras) listed in chapter 24: murder (mdrana), expelling someone (uccdtana), annihilation (jambhana),
paralysing (stambhana), benumbing (mohana), "nailing down" (kllana), taking away someone's speech (vdcdpahdra), making someone dumb (mukatva), deaf (bddhirya), blind (andhana), impotent (sandhlkarana), and changing one's form (rupasya parivartanam) (Torzsok 2000: 138-139).

Evil Goals...
Some of the goals of Tantric spells are found in any religion, including the Vedic tradition in Hinduism. People everywhere pray to their gods or guardian spirits for protection from hunger, violence, disaster, disease, and premature death. People also pray for good things, to be rich, smart, and talented, and to attract the opposite sex. But a lot of the appeal of Tantra was its claim to be able to gratify far more antisocial desires, to give practitioners magical powers that would enable them to kill, subjugate, seduce, and harm other people.
Other Tantric collections show the same pattern as the Siddhayogesvarımata, with a handful of spiritual or beneficial objectives, and a lot of aggressive, offensive, and anti-social ones. Antisocial or sorcerous objectives are not unknown in Vedic rites, but the emphasis changes dramatically as Prof. Shingo Einoo has shown in a meticulous analysis of Vedic sources, specifically the Rgvidhana and the Samavidhanabrahmana, and the kamya rites given in the Gobhilagrhyasutra, which he compares to the Vınasikhatantra, a Hindu Tantric text, and the Amoghapasakalparaja, a Buddhist Tantric text. The Vedic sources include occasional and fairly innocuous mentions of sorcerous goals. In both Tantric sources, however, the emphasis shifts substantially toward sorcery and black magic. ...and Evil Means
Tantrism also had a reputation for evil because of the means it used. A Vedic ritual for long life might be: "Purify your mind and recite these four verses ten times while making an offering of butter in a fire," whereas a Tantric ritual to gain sorcerous powers would involve things like blood sacrifice of animals, eating meat, drinking wine or menstrual blood, and having sex on top of a corpse at midnight. The tantric rite is therefore obviously going to be perceived as being a more powerful kind of magic, but also one that violates many, many social norms.There has been a tendency in the last 200 years for high-minded Hindus and Buddhists to deny that Tantric rites were ever performed, or were ever even intended to be performed, as written. These apologists claim that the Tantric rites were some kind of code for spiritual practices, to be performed in the imagination only, and that they were harmless rituals intended to help practitioners reach spiritual enlightenment. However, few, if any, serious scholars who have examined the relevant written tantras from that period conclude that they were anything other than literal instructions for the performance of sorcery and black magic.
The Tantric practices performed and discussed in public today are a highly sanitized shadow of their old forms, and many modern practitioners will insist that Tantra is just an outward and earthly path to enlightenment, a benign alternative to the inward, ascetic path. But if you look in the shadows, you can still find plenty of people willing to teach you the old black magic. So the question is whether Tantra has truly changed, or has simply gone back underground, as it has often done before when it was out of favor.
Incidentally, Westerners who think of yogis as benevolent, or at least contemplative, holy men, should read Sinister Yogis, David Gordon White's investigation of the historical record. It's part of his excellent three volume series on the origins and development of the Tantric traditions that are found in all Asian religions, including: The Alchemical Body: Siddha Traditions in Medieval India and Kiss of the Yogini: "Tantric Sex" in its South Asian Contexts. These are serious, scholarly works of history and philology, not popular books, so they are heavy going (sometimes very heavy), but they are worth the hard slog if you are interested in the subject.
Modern Tantrism
Tantrism is alive and well as a major element within Hinduism, no matter how much "civilized" Hindus might like to deny it. It is considered disreputable and even shameful by many, but it is still practiced, and many villagers spend scarce rupees for spells, charms, and even curses.
